Houston traffic denies Barcia sixth win; Windham injured in wreck

HOUSTON (March 31) — The most promising of nights for the GEICO Honda race team ended with a slew of accidents and a few broken hearts, but fortunately no serious damage Saturday at Reliant Stadium.

Supercross Lites East points leader Justin Barcia was robbed of his sixth win in seven starts this season in the cruelest of fashions when a lapped rider, former teammate Lance Vincent, ran into him from behind on a curve. Barcia went down and although he jumped up and remounted his CRF250 as quickly as possible, his huge 10-second lead had evaporated. Emotional to the end, Barcia rode across in second place, increasing his lead in the world rankings to 32 over Blake Wharton.

“I’ve never been this upset about the outcome of a race,” said Barcia, the No. 1 qualifier of the race. “That kid (Vincent) stayed at my house and trained with me for a couple of weeks and then he does what he did. I’m not sure what he was thinking. This is about as frustrated as I can get.

“Big picture, we came in second and we earned a bunch more points. We’re that much closer to where we want to be. I just feel bad that I let my emotions get the best of me at the end of the race. I went over to talk to Lance and I interfered with the Asterisks Medical Team and that was stupid. I apologize to all those guys big time.

“I had a great ride. It just didn’t finish like I thought it would.”

Crowd favorite Kevin Windham was battling James Stewart for several laps of the second Supercross heat race and appeared to be setting up the past series champion for a big pass on the final turn when his right footpeg dug into the face of a jump and pitched him off his machine. Windham had to be assisted off the track by the Asterisks Medical Team and was unable to return.

“I’ve hurt my left thumb and wrist and my right shoulder,” Windham said. “They took some x-rays but they were inconclusive. They put a cast on my arm and wrapped up my shoulder. I’m going back home and I’ll go to my personal doctor tomorrow. I really have no idea how serious it is because they just couldn’t tell. It would be crazy for me to speculate on what might happen from here.”

For the second time this season, Justin Bogle tangled with Malcolm Stewart and crashed. On this occasion it was in the first turn of the Main event and just as it was in Dallas, both men went down. Bogle scrambled to get up and rode hard to catch the pack, eventually finishing in eighth place. He is in now 11th in the Lites East points.

Team rider Wil Hahn, who is filling in for the injured Trey Canard on the Muscle Milk Honda team, crashed in his heat race and needed the Last Chance Qualifier race to make it to the Main, where he finished 13th overall.

DVS GEICO Honda’sICO Barcia earns podium spot on crazy night in Indy

INDIANAPOLIS (March 17) – GEICO Honda’s Justin Barcia saw his four-race winning streak in the Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series snapped on Saturday night, but he still salvaged a podium finish by crossing the line third.

“For now, I’m calling this the ‘nightmare race,’” Barcia said. “The track was just brutal, and it was just a weird night overall. But it’s great to finish on the podium again and not lose many points.”

As disappointing as the third place was, the final outcome could have been much worse. Barcia got caught up in a mob scene in the first turn of the Lites main. He briefly went down during Lap 2, and came up in ninth place.

Barcia worked his way into eighth place by Lap 4 when Kyle Cunningham went down hard, bringing out a red flag.

The stoppage triggered a new-to-2012 staggered restart rule. Had three laps or less been completed before the red flag, the riders would have gone back to their gates. Since it had gone beyond the three-lap mark, the riders were lined up in a single column that stretched from the hole shot line to near the starting area.

“It was a confusing scene,” Barcia said. “It’s the first time they’ve had to do this, so it was crazy – but it fit the madness of this race.”

While Barcia was still eighth, the gap between himself and the front of the field was greatly reduced. Barcia made the most of his second chance to storm through the bunched-up field and claim his spot on the podium.

Barcia leaves Indy with a 22-point lead over second place Darryn Durham.

The night was just as helter-skelter for GEICO Honda’s other two riders, but neither Lites rider Justin Bogle nor Supercross rider Kevin Windham had luck on their side Saturday.

Bogle seemed poised to make the most of his second chance following the red flag. He restarted sixth, worked his way up to fourth within three laps before a spill dropped him to eighth. The rookie dug back in to finish sixth.

“I switched things up and just tried to have fun this week,” Bogle said. “I felt good in practice today and I played it safe and got third in my heat race. The main was pandemonium, pretty much.

“I was feeling really good after the restart, but had a fall. I’m getting sick of these rookie mistakes. I know I’m learning, but I really want to get to the point where I have things figured out.”

Bogle is now in seventh place in the Lites standings, 11 points behind Jake Canada for sixth.

Indianapolis was more unkind to Windham than it was to Bogle. Windham suffered two hard spills during the night and ultimately finished 18th in the main.

The first crash happened when James Stewart went down right after the start of the first Supercross heat, collecting Windham and a handful of other racers in a pileup. The second came 10 laps into the main event when he was running fifth and battling for position with Mike Alessi. The two made contact and Windham wound up the worse for wear in that exchange.

“I’m sore everywhere right now,” Windham said. “My GEICO Honda was running good, I won the LCQ. It just didn’t come together for me anywhere else tonight.”

After his finish, Windham drops to fifth in the standings and is five points behind Davy Millsaps for fourth.

The GEICO Honda team gets little to time to rest as they are back at it on March 24 for the next Monster Energy AMA Supercross event at Toronto’s Rogers Centre.

4 in and row for Bam Bam and Windham 3rd on the box.

DVS Four score! Barcia takes fourth straight win in Daytona slop

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (March 10) — Reigning Supercross Lites champion Justin Barcia rose above the mud and the muck of a rain-soaked Daytona International Raceway to score his fourth victory of the season Saturday night.

Aboard his powerful GEICO Honda CRF250, Barcia held off two furious charges by rival Blake Baggett to remain perfect on the season.

Supercross megastar Kevin Windham also had a big night for the GEICO Honda team, reaching the podium in the 450cc class for the first time this season with a solid third-place result.

A heavy rain soaked the dirt course for much of the afternoon and evening, forming huge puddles in several areas. In the earlier heat races, two of which were won by Barcia and Windham, numerous racers and motorcycles were swallowed up by the soup. Officials were forced to remove most of the whoop sections and shorten the Lites main event by three laps and the SX main event to 16 laps just to complete the event.

“That was the most demanding race of my career,” Barcia said. “It was so gnarly out there. I needed a good start and I got it and just powered through from there. The biggest thanks to my trainer for pushing me to be in shape because it was just brutal conditions. Tonight was all about survival.

“This season has been mind-blowing. You would never expect a start like this, winning four in a row. This GEICO Honda team is unbelievable and my bike has been perfect all year. I needed it tonight because Baggett was on it. You could hear the crowd going nuts every time he got close. They’re so close to you on the front stretch and you hear the roar and it pushes you. This was, no doubt, the best race win of my career.”

Like Barcia, Windham used a strong start to stay in podium position throughout the main event. He rounded the first turn in third place and remained there as the top three riders managed to separate themselves from the chase pack.

“I’ve always raced well in the mud and that was certainly the case again tonight,” said Windham, who jumped up two spots to fourth place. “I’m really happy to give our guys a podium finish. We’ve been close several times and it feels good to punch one through.

“The course was really rutted and there just weren’t any areas where you could get aggressive and try to make a pass. If you got out of the one line everyone was riding you were most likely going to go down. I had to stay patient and hope for a chance to maybe get to second or even challenge for the lead but it didn’t happen. I’m still pleased and I’m hoping this opens the door to more podium finishes in the weeks to come.”

Rookie Justin Bogle was stuck in ninth place for the first half of the Lites main before crashing near the start/finish line. After regaining his footing and firing up his machine, he slipped off the course and slid down into a massive mud hole. Although he tried for several minutes to free himself, he could not escape, eventually surrendering the race.

Officially, Bogle finished in 18th place, earning three points.

The tour now heads to Indianapolis for a guaranteed dry race next Saturday inside Lucas Oil Stadium.
