Jordy Smith Back to Back at J Bay!

July 25th, 2011

South Africa’s Jordy Smith wins the Billabong Pro J-Bay for the second year in a row.
With rain coming down in buckets and the surf resembling that of a washing machine, the final day of the 2011 Billabong Pro J-Bay anything but dreamy—unless your name was Jordy Smith. The big boy from Durban brushed aside the crappy conditions and beat Mick Fanning to take home his second ASP World Tour victory of his career at the same place his first one came.-TWS

CIVILIAN CASUALTIES!

Extra!

When you wage war for a world title, innocent people invariably get caught in the crossfire. Here, Jordy Smith flattens a bystander. That’s the caption for the image above featured on the Extra page in the July issue of Surfer Magazine. Jordy assured us that no innocent’s were flattened while shooting this photo!

POWER STANKINGS!

June 10th, 2011

Jordy #7 on the current Power Rankings

Surfline’s post Brazil Power Rankings are out and I must say, I think they are the most boring and worst ones to date. The PR used to be exciting when Lewis Samuels did them, every time they came out cell phones and e-mails were lit up like switchboards but now they are just watered down blase. And I don’t say that because of what was written about our DVS riders I say that because there is really no substance of the rankings after the contest in Brazil. No inside information, no insight that armchair fantasy quarterbacks like myself, couldn’t gather off watching the webcast or learning via the pro’s tweets. Give us something more, give us Lewis Samuels back!

WEDGED!

June 7th, 2011

California has been a benefactor of lots of early season south swell activity with the last swell just petering out and a new one now filling in. Spencer Pirdy lives for this time of year and is considered one of the best guys at the Wedge nowadays according to a poll in the most recent issue of Ghetto Juice Magazine. Here is Pirdy dropping in on a beauty during last week’s pulse that is part of Surfer Mag’s coverage of the swell.

LET THE KIDS DESIGN!

Future DVS shoe designers!

The South Bay Boardriders Surf Club held its final contest of the season at Manhattan Beach Pier, Ca. this past Saturday and was hosted by Spyder Surf Shop. Really fun waves were had by all for most of the day and the event wrapped up at around 7pm that evening. Competitors had plenty of time to rest before Sunday’s awards ceremony at Sangria. DVS provided 10 pairs of White Revivals for a special art contest in which the kids decorated before voting on who’s shoe was best. All kids who participated were 12 years and under and the winners were:

1st place Kelly Murphy  - 8 year boy
2nd place Malia Balzer  - 9 year girl
3rd place Shana Brog – 11 year girl

Needless to say the kids were super stoked on the contest as were we. To see more photos of the shoe design contest check out our Facebook page and the Manhattan Beach Patch.
Down at the ISA World Junior Surfing Championships in Peru, Derek Peters has posted two solid heat victory’s for Team USA in the event so far. In Brazil the WQS 6-Star Prime Oakley Pro got underway today at Praia de Itauna in Saquarema. Unfortunately, Granger Larsen was eliminated in the round of 96 but Gabe Kling has yet to surf and will probably do so on Thursday.

JUMPING THE JUNE!

May 22nd, 2011

Ped happy to Jump the June!

It appears that Southern California isn’t the only place that suffers from June Gloom or something of a similar downer. Pedro Fernandez joined up with some New Jerseyans and missioned to Costa Rica which is a good bet this time of year with the start of the Pacific south swell season. Check out ESM’s feature Jumping the June!
